This coming week, the C4 will be getting a new clutch and perhaps an aluminum flywheel. I'll be flushing the coolant, changing the diff oil, adding diff additive to make the LSD last a bit longer before a rebuild, and trying to get the tape deck fixed (it's stuck on eject and I can't get my 80s tunes going). Then I'll be checking out a Saab as a shared winter daily and if that checks out, try to sell a Chrysler Sebring V6 LXi CONVERTIBLE (one offer at a time, please). Then I'm hoping that the C4 will be ready for some autocross or track day duty, because I'm ready to actually have something to do with my spare time/money (what spare money?) and everything but the transmission needs a serious re-working so it won't get much worse if I were to beat on it for a while. With a redheaded stepchild Corvette and Saab I will have truly passed into the realm of automotive eccentricity. Anyways, enough about me—what are your plans? And how were your Christmas hauls?

Kinja'd!!!

I also cleaned the interior, gave up on exterior due to rapid paint deterioration. I have some nice microfiber pads and sealant wax stuff now, though.

Here's Tuned Port Injected Rage bait and Axial bait all in one picture. If I ever restore this car, I'll keep that steering wheel because it takes a lot of driving to put a hole like that in leather.

I'm planning on an oil change, and some new tailight bulbs. Luckily, I need zero unscheduled maintenance done right now. (Knock on wood) Otherwise, This A4 is still bulletproof.

I have to pull the tranny out of my 98 and replace the clutch, throwout bearing and flywheel. my 68 needs a rear main seal and the shifter "brain" replaced.

Also my grandpa and I are currently trying to deal on a corvette as well.

Did you recover your seats recently? They are nice! Your interior looks very nice overall, in fact.

Not much going for me this Christmas, car-wise. I got a timing belt for my old WRX. Since I work a lot of long, odd, shift-work hours and it's my only car, it should be pretty interesting blocking out a time for installation.

As a life-long Corvette fan, I'll just add; LONG LIVE THE BREADLOAF!

Glad to hear it! Oil changes aren't bad for me, although I have two different kinds to do: one for the overdrive and one for the engine. People do like to jump on Audis for reliability but you have the 5 speed and good ole V6 which really seems like a good combo. If I can get my car hoonable I'd be happy, because I just want to have as much fun as possible before putting it away before tackling the big things. Never been to a track or autocross, and it would be nice to have a 9000 over winters I don't have to maintain myself!

Front lower control arm bushings, alignment, and fix the pixels in my buddy's CLK55 on Saturday. Leaving town on a road trip, only 6 hour drive each way, on Monday in the wagon. But the wagon needs a new catalytic converter and front driveline before that, which I will also do Saturday. Hopefully I've got time for all of that!

Ill be fixing the motor mounts in the FR-S, changing the oil with some Mazda highy moly stuff, and giving the interior a good cleaning (also the exterior if the weather cooperates)

On the SV650 Ill be doing an oil change and some winterization.

Ill be combining parts from my 2 70s honda express scooters to hopefully get one wirking vehicle.

On the Aero 50, I'll be rebuilding the top end

I only expect to finish about half of that...

Actually, the PO did just before I bought the car! Really worked wonders for his sales strategy, too. And thank you, it rattles a lot but aside from the rear carpeting and driver-side door cards it's holding up well! And you have some complicated planning for that repair then, what model WRX? The breadloaf is probably the best safety feature of all time, giving the passenger confidence that in the event of an accident an airbag will pop out and save their nose, thus reducing driver distraction; glad to hear from another supporter!

It is an overlooked car, Everybody laughs when I tell them it's reliable. But I totally make them eat their words.

Glad you'll be getting the new flywheel and clutch, a slipping clutch is horrible to drive with. About that tape deck, Haha. Most of the later C4's I've been accustomed to had problems with the CD player not accepting CD's. So it seems to fun in the family, Lol.

Maintaining yourself is nice, and a good way to save money. But during winter it kills me, But if you do get the Saab (I've probably said this before) IM AutoHaus in Falls Church is the place to go. They've always good a good selection of cars, and do service last time I checked. I used to bring my Audi next door.

Same weather here! I'll be taking it into the mechanics tomorrow and awaiting diagnosis of the clutch, so I'll probably get it back by the time the roads are covered in salt. I'm a little anxious to see the underbody as I think they may have lifted it up by the floorpan last time and those are notoriously weak. I don't know of any way to easily repair that. Good mechanics and friends, though I always bring my own parts. Really hoping to get out on the track come spring, as it makes more sense than just driving through 15 minutes of traffic 5 days a week.

My WRX is an '06 base model. I have to drive about 100 miles round trip for work every day, so that's why I'm concerned about the install. The last timing belt I put in was a Miata, and that took me a solid 24 hours in a car with an engine bay I could stand in once the radiator was out. The WRX is a bit more cramped, and has 2 more cams.

I don't know how any passenger could be worried about sitting behind the breadloaf. It's basically an 18-inch long vinyl-covered boob waiting to bloody your nose in the event of an accident.

I'm at the point where I'm going to be looking to buy a new car soon, so I need to get that belt changed just so I can sell/trade it with a clear conscience. That, and so my valves don't get into a liplock with my pistons in the middle of my joyous daily commute.

Thanks for the sympathy. The worst part? I'm actually thinking about buying a new STI. Unlike the new WRX, they still have the same engine (and same timing belt) that are in my car (albeit more powerful).

I've often thought about buying a Corvette, but the realities and geography of my situation would make that kind of hard. I've identified three levels of possible Corvette ownership for myself:

1. I couldn't buy a decent C4 with the cash I have on hand, since that would be an outright purchase and a second (project) car. I'd need to sell the WRX and rely on a C4 as my only transportation.

2. I could take out a loan for a reasonably priced C5 Z06 and keep the WRX, but even that would likely require some upkeep and refurbishing from day one.

3. I could sell my WRX and put a down payment on a nice C6, but it would be my only car. It would probably get better highway mileage than my WRX, but the weather isn't nice enough here for that to be a possibility.

From the top of Oregon to the bottom of Oregon. To see the in-laws for the holidays. Luckily we have a hotel so we're not staying with them, which will save my sanity.

The CLK55 is decently quick for sure, I've definitely been enjoying it for the past couple of weeks. My buddy has just left it with me almost entirely since he bought it so that I could work on it when I had time. After the bushings it will just need brakes and shocks and it will be mechanically perfect.

Screw it! Cut that exhaust up! No better time than now.

Yeah, I really like the B5 A4s in a lot of ways. People jump to conclusions. I haven't had one single problem in 8 months with my 30 year old sports car which was made at the same time as things like the 944 turbo, XJS, etc. I really hate my slipping clutch, and I'm doing 90% of my driving in stop-and-go stuff. No fun. And I'd just discovered that the cassette player (or rather, the eject button) didn't work after buying an MP3-to-cassette adapter. I was ready with music and everything, but I'd put in the tape and have it spit back out immediately. At least it seems that the rest is functional. Heard lots of problems with '90+ cars with audio systems on the forums. I'd probably do the maintenance myself, but since this would be my dad's car, I wouldn't be paying for it which would be quite an upside. Along with getting rid of the Sebring. I guess the Saab could serve as a good intro to rallycross car! I hadn't heard of IM autohaus but had heard about autoscania, I'll have to check out autohaus. Thanks for the recommendation.

Interior is looking awesome, man! Makes me miss mine :(

I really don't have any plans set in stone for the C4 yet. I really want to a new exhaust system for it, but if I were to do that now, I would blow all of my savings. So I gotta save some cash. I also want to fix my cassette player, but I may try to do that myself before I send it out to someone. I'm also thinking about getting one of those plaques that you have for the interior atop your cup holder cover, but I'm still deciding. That's really just about it.

Wow, that's be a really nice DD! I'm relying solely on my C4 and during 2014 it has been as reliable as a new Camry—it hasn't failed me once. I only have something like a 10 mile commute, though. I paid $5,500 for mine, which (despite its mechanical soundness and manual transmission) is a good deal more than it's worth. I have an '85 that just turned 135k on the clock, which is pretty analog (no ABS) but it's fine in rain, heat, and cold thus far. '86 introduced ABS and climate control, which don't matter so much to me, and '89 will get you the 6 speed along with adjustable suspension and traction control. Then you're looking at $8,000 for a fairly nice driver. I prefer the doug nash 4+3, personally. Great transmission to click into OD for the highway or cruising (25+ MPG with my worn out car), or have sporty gearing without it engaged. Very stout Super T10 manual found in old Nascar cars. But AWD sounds like the best option if your weather isn't ideal and you have a long commute, in which case the STI sounds like a great option.

The auto journalist driving it asked if he wanted to look under the hood and he thought there was a V16 (which was obviously an LT5). The wide fenders on a round taillight C4 would also look pretty neat.

Wagon is getting a plethora of new parts with the motor that's being installed (maybe I'll get it Monday/Tuesday?) including motor mounts, power steering pump, and a ton of other little parts that either broke or refuse to come off the original motor.

But once it's driving again, I need to inquire about a new windshield, because the current one is pitted pretty bad all over. Getting a wavetrac is high up on the to-do list, as well as strut bars front and rear (hidden in the rear with a cargo net). Finally, I want to find out what the shop things about a full tune, or if the MDS makes that impossible (I'm more curious than actually considering it).

But if I get to spend more time with my girlfriend, I need to take the driver's side visor off her car and figure out where it's broken to fix it, or just figure out where to get a new one, because it falls down.

the Golf R is about to roll over 60k miles, at which point it needs a brake fluid flush and new pads, in addition to the usual oil change. While I'm at it I'll get the rear left window regulator fixed, and look into getting a carbon cleaning done. I also have a small windshield crack (an inch across) from a rock on the highway that needs to get fixed. Might need a haldex oil flush as well.

After all that is done, and after I've found a house to buy, I'll decide whether I'm going to keep it or not. It's a fun and practical car, but I feel like moving on to something different to me.

My car-related plans are to rent whatever is most interesting from Hertz when I have to go see my family down in DC in April. If a money truck accidentally backs into my apartment, I'll get a Gallardo or an R8. I've always wanted to try them.

Skip the aluminum flywheel and the other weaker but faster parts unless you need to win a race. Your best money is making everything work as it was supposed to first, and carefully installing high performance parts later. (I've seen so many high performance disasters that made the car slower, such gas, leak oil and coolant, created a clutch shutter, etc.) Changing the rear end ratio or adding posi is the one place were I do change things without concern.

With that said, I do have a 351W, 4 speed standard 411 9inch with posi E-150 work van

and a 2wd vanagon westy with the manual locking diff from the syncro, and the taller springs, for crossing rivers, but have not decided which 911 to steal and sawzaw to make it fast yet.

the 4000q's are stock down to the factory wheels, but after driving from san fran. to portland with low profile it had when I bought my wife's car, I can say they were a disaster.

Your Chevy should be more reliable than a Camry, unless it has suffered.

I will replace the bad speakers in the back with two others but I have no idea how. The car being in a tight spot for 3 months doesn't help.

It was just 2 screws holding it in and 3 cables on the back but it was a bitch to fit past the steering wheel.

It is pretty awesome how reliable the C4 is compared to the Jag and 944 Turbo. Those things are pretty high maintenance cars, Especially the Jag with it's constant electrical gremlins. It's amazing how the C4 still surpasses them, relatively problem free.

Was the Mp3/Cassette thing one of those tape decks that you can load music into? When I first bought my A4, before I got a new radio it only had a cassette player and I bought one of those. Because I can't live without my music, Haha.

The Saab would be a great rallycross car, I have no idea where the closest one is though. Like it's already got fog lights doesn't it? There do seem to be a healthy amount of places that do work on Saabs in Northern Va. though, which is always a good thing and since that one is older, I don't think it will have the sludge problem and that kind of thing.

I'll be working on my daily driver 2000 Impeza Outback Sport. The list includes more evicting of the mouse that lives in my ducting, diagnosing whumping sound coming from left rear wheel at speed, changing tie rod ends and rack and pinion boot, more body work on right rear fender, and hopefully passing state inspection.

Oh, and part of the Christmas haul was an OBD Link LX Bluetooth OBD adapter so I can keep track of even more vitals on my phone while I drive.

A lot of people forget to just simply clean their wipers, I've had mine for 2 years.

Good that it's just some minor stuff. And cool about the house! What kind of car would you replace the R with?

That's what I'll end up doing. I can't justify the price difference when there are better uses for the money. And awesome cars! I'd love to see the vans and the 4000q if you ever post them. I saw a mint barn-find(ish) westy vanagon the other day with a full drivetrain overhaul. It was a slushbox, though, so it's probably not going to be much fun on merges.

Yeah, it was a tape deck with an aux jack. And I'm honestly surprised at the C4's reliability thus far, makes it so that I can keep it maintained and on the road. It was a cassette with a aux jack in it, so that you can plug it into your phone. If only I can figure out how to bypass the continuous eject. The Saab seems like it would be really fun at rallycross if we only had some here! Fog lights and all. I don't think they are prone to much trouble.

That one was made before the sludge area from what I understand, so it probably should be pretty problem free for the most part.

Just get a piece of duct tape, and force it in to keep it from coming back out or something like that, Haha.

Well, I've really wanted a 911 for a long time. How much I can spend on one depends on how much I'm spending on a house. I'd also want an efficient car, probably a TDI wagon.

Once again, that depends on how much I can budget. If it's on the low end (15-20k) it would be an SC. High end, 997 C2S. I'll have to wait and see how things pan out.

The 3.8 997 engine is glorious and in a very approachable package. At the same time, the SC would put a huge smile on my face because oldness. Good options to have (and park in your own garage for that matter). For some middle ground I might consider a high-miles (well maintained) 993, but they are getting pricey and, aesthetically speaking, not for everyone.

I think 993's are beautiful, but for the price I would rather get an SC and rebuild it. They are getting incredibly expensive.

Same here. They're really bringing crazy money, but being in short order and with so many air-cooled enthusiasts, I guess it's justified to the buyers. The SC is such a neat car and would be a great car to work on.
